West Rigolets Lighthouse
Pontchartrain Lake, Louisiana
The West Rigolets Lighthouse was completed in 1855. It is a square building, on pilings, that held a lantern that was centered on it's hipped roof. The light had an elevation of 30 feet above the lake, but was visible for ten ( 10 ) miles. The original cost of the station was $5,000. In 1868, a storm caused $5,000 damage to the lighthouse. Then, the next year a gale caused another $6,000 damage.
The station was raised six feet and placed on ferro-cement columns in 1917. It was discontinued and abandoned in 1945.
The lighthouse could be seen by looking north-west from the bridge that crosses the Pearl River on U S 90, northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Unfortunately, the lighthouse was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina.
