Crooked River Lighthouse

Crooked River Light
West of Carrabelle, Florida

The Dog Island Light Station was destroyed in a storm on September 18, 1873. $40,000 was appropriated to build a new lighthouse.  However, in 1888, the Light-House Board asked that the appropriation be used to build a lighthouse at the mouth of Crooked River.

There were problems in getting a title to the site and then a fire destroyed the purchase documents. This caused the starting of the work to be delayed until January, 1895.  Work was completed in August and it was lit on October 28, 1895.

The lighthouse is a square, iron skeleton tower and had a fourth order lens that flashed twice every 10 seconds.  In 1902, the color scheme was changed to be white on the lower half, red upper half and black lantern room.  It has a tower height of 100 feet and the focal plane is 115 feet above sea level.  The light could be seen from 16 miles.  The present optic is 190MM,

The grounds to the lighthouse area are accessible, but not the lighthouse. It is located two miles west of Carrabelle, Florida on U S Highway 98. There is a small brown sign on the highway marking the road to the lighthouse, which is located on the North side of the highway - not the side towards the Gulf of Mexico.
